“has entered Israel knowingly and unlawfully and who at any time between the 16th Kislev, 3708 (29th November, 1947) and his entry was -

(1) a national or citizen of the Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Saudi-Arabia, Trans-Jordan, Iraq or the Yemen ; or

(2) a resident or visitor in one of those countries or in any part of Palestine outside Israel ; or

(3) a Palestinian citizen or a Palestinian resident without nationality or citizenship or whose nationality or citizenship was doubtful and who, during the said period, left his ordinary place of residence in an area which has become a part of Israel for a place outside Israel.”

In other words, the 1954 law targeted Palestinian refugees, who were evicted from their homes during the 1947-1948 nakba and attempted to return to their lands in the new state of Israel. These are refugees that Israel created and, in violation of international law and numerous UN resolutions, Israel continues to leave these people without a homeland.

But in both Israeli history and the contemporary media, the Palestinian refugees are not refugees—they are “terrorists” or “infiltrators,” intent on destroying the “Jewish and democratic” state.  While a very small number of Palestinian refugees were, indeed, militants, the vast majority were people whose sole “crime” was acting upon their desire to return to their lost homes.

Today, the language the state of Israel and the local media use to describe African refugees is equally misleading. For the most part, they are not called “refugees” or “asylum seekers”—even though Israel tacitly acknowledges their status by not deporting them. They are called “infiltrators” who pose a “threat” to the state. Additionally, they are falsely labeled by the state and media as work migrants.

At the end of the day, the justification for both the 1954 Prevention of Infiltration Law as well was the new amendment is one and the same – the maintenance of the Jewish character of the State of Israel. Thus, in the name of the Jewish majority, the state of Israel deprives refugees, whether Palestinian or African, of their most basic human rights.

A Palestinian family, mother, father and a 10 years old son, a British activist and myself, a strange company, what can I say, are making our way from Jayus to Tel Aviv. We arrive at Qalqiliya checkpoint, or in its formal name Eliyahu crossing, and I get but a taste of the Palestinian checkpoints experience.

“ID” demands the soldier.

She's staring at 3 blue ID cards, and one British passport with growing suspicion, matching faces and photos and asks me:

“So, how do you know each other?”

“We're friends”

“All of you?”

“Yes. All of us.”

“How do you know him?”

“I met him in Scotland.”

“I keep the Ids, turn right, park the car, and get searched.”

“Everybody out of the car.”

“Stay in the car.”

“I said, everybody out of the car.”

I'm thinking to myself “Will you simply make up your mind”, as I'm opening and closing, and reopening doors.

A rifle points at us, and there's a finger on the trigger. A different soldier starts shooting questions at me.

“Where are you from?”

“Where is he from?”

“Where do you know each other from?”

“Where are you coming from?”

I'm tackled, I don't know what's the correct answer to this one, olive harvest in Jayus, certainly isn't.

“I gave them a tour of the area. We came in from Kfar Qassem.”

“Don't look at him, answer me!”

“What he said”, I mumble.

She knows that I'm lying. I know that she knows.

For some reason she doesn't press it any farther, and sends us to get searched inside.

Metal detectors look the same everywhere, but the rifle is still there, and the finger is still on the trigger, even as it is pointing to the floor.

Four adults and a 10 years old boy are waiting for their bags.

“What's that?”

“A tripod”.

And the bag goes back in for another round.

“Don't take any phone calls in here!”

(And certainly don't mention that you are being held in a checkpoint.

They hand me back a bunch of Ids, because it is only me that they are speaking with.

I refuse to smile, utter the obligatory Thanks.

We head quickly back to the car, not leaving them any time to change their minds.

משפחה פלסטינית, אבא, אמא וילד בן 10, פעיל בריטי עושים את דרכנו מג'יוס חזרה לתל אביב. אנחנו מגיעים למחסום קלקיליה, או בשמו המכובס “מעבר אליהו”, ואני מקבלת טעימה מחווית המחסומים הפלסטינית.

“תעודות" דורשת החיילת.
היא מסתכלת על שלוש תעודות זהות כחולות ודרכון בריטי אחד בחשד הולך וגובר.
מצמידה פרצופים לתמונת פספורט, ושואלת אותי.
"אז איך אתם מכירים?”
“אנחנו חברים".
“כולם?” היא מסרבת להאמין.
“כן, כולם".
“מאיפה את מכירה אותו?”
“נפגשנו בסקוטלנד.”
“התעודות נשארות אצלי, לכו ימינה לבדיקה".

“כולם לצאת מהמכונית".
“אמרתי לא לצאת מהמכונית".
“אמרתי כולם לצאת מהמכונית".
ואני חושבת רק תחליטו כבר, ופותחת וסוגרת ופותחת וסוגרת דלתות.
רובה מכוון אלינו, ואצבע על ההדק, וחיילת אחרת מתחילה לירות לעברי שאלות.
“מאיפה את?”
“מאיפה הוא?”
“איך את מכירה אותו?”
“מאיפה באתם?”
אני פתאום לא בטוחה מה לענות. מסקנו זייתים בג'יוס זו בטוח לא התשובה הנכונה.
“לקחתי אותם לסיור באיזור, באנו מכפר קאסם.”
“אל תסתכלי עליו, תעני לי.”
“מה שהוא אמר", אני ממלמלת.
היא יודעת שאני משקרת. אני יודעת שהיא יודעת.
משום מה היא לא מתעקשת, ושולחת אותנו פנימה לחיפוש.

גלאי מתכות נראים אותו הדבר בכל מקום, אבל הרובה עדין שם, והאצבע עדיין על ההדק, גם כשהוא מופנה למטה.
ארבעה מבוגרים וילד בן עשר מחכים לתיקים מזדחלים.
“מה זה?”
“חצובה.”
והתיק חוזר לסיבוב נוסף בבטן המכונה.
“לא לענות לטלפונים".
)ובטח שלא להגיד שמעכבים אותך במחסום(.
אני מקבלת חזרה ערימת תעודות, כי רק איתי מדברים.
מסרבת לחייך, מפטירה תודה.
אנחנו ממהרים למכונית, לפני שהם יגלו סימני חרטה.

משפטים מההצגה מהדהדים בראשי חודשים אחר כך. "לפציפיסט אין גבול שמאחוריו יש אויב, מאחורי מה שמכונה גבול יש אנשים, בני אדם, כמוני, כמוכם". לצד ציטוטים של ג'ון לנון, ומשפטי מחאה אחרים, אני רושמת על כל שולחן שאני יושבת לידו "ארל'ה צדק", ו"אין מלחמה צודקת".

ללקסיקון נכנסו מילים חדשות, "סרבנות מצפון", "סרבנות פוליטית", "פציפיזם", ואני יודעת באותו הרגע שאת מה שארל'ה לא עשה בסופו של דבר, אני כן הולכת לעשות. אני הולכת לצו הראשון ומודיעה שאני הולכת לסרב.

חתמתי על המכתב, והייתי חלק ממה שאני מאמינה שהייתה תנועת הסירוב המשמעותית ביותר שהייתה כאן. לא היינו ראשונים, וגם לא היינו אחרונים, אבל אמרנו משהו שחייב היה להאמר, בזמן שמישהו חייב היה לומר אותו.

את הפטור הנכסף קיבלתי מבלי לשבת יום אחד בכלא, מרוויחה או נפסדת מהשוביניזם הצבאי דאז, תלוי את מי שואלים, והחיילות בבקו"ם התקשו להתמודד עם קיפצוצי השמחה שליווי את קבלת ההכרזה.

ועברו אינתיפאדה אחת, ושתי "מלחמות”, ועוד עשר שנים של כיבוש.

עשר שנים עברו, והיום, ככל הנראה, אף מגמת תאטרון לא תוכל להמחיז את הסרט הזה מבלי שתפתח נגדה ועדת חקירה. עשר שנים עברו, ופס הקול של שנות העשרה שלי מוצא אט אט אל מחוץ לחוק.

עם צביטה של נוסטלגיה בלב, ודמעה בזווית העין אני צופה שוב בסרט. "כמה צעירים היינו, כמה יפים, כמה תמימים", אומר מרגו. ובאמת היינו צעירים ויפים ותמימים, וקצת טיפשים, וחדורי אמונה ותקווה. ואני הולכת בהפגנה החברתית, אולי הגדולה ביותר שהייתה כאן, ורבים כל כך ממי שהלכו איתי אז, הולכים לצידי גם שם, ועדין יפים, אחד אחת, התקווה עדין נוצצת בעיניים, ויש שעדין יקראו לה תמימות.

עשר שנים אחרי, וזה עדין הסרט הישראלי הטוב ביותר שראיתי, וזה עדין הסרט שנתן לי את המילים שאפשרו לי לבוא לצבא ולהגיד "לא".

ובכל השנים שעברו לא היה רגע אחד של חרטה. עשר שנים אחר כך, וכמעט בכל יום, ברגע כזה או אחר, עדין מברכת  על ההחלטה לסרב, על ידי שלא לחצה על ההדק, על גופי שלא עטה את המדים, על הקו שלא חציתי, על כך שאני לא הייתי שם.

עשר שנים אחרי ועדין "לפציפיסט אין גבול שמאחוריו יש אויב, מאחורי מה שמכונה גבול יש בני אדם, כמוני, כמוכם".

והיום, אני אולי קצת פחות פציפיסטית, אבל כמעט כל שבוע, עוברת גבולות, קיימים או מדומיינים, אל מי שרוב הציבור רואים בהם אויבים, ואני רואה בהם חברים למאבק, שותפים לדרך, אנשים יקרים ואהובים, אבל לפני הכל, בני אדם.

In the last couple of years, I have had the growing feeling that the main struggle of the LGBT community in Israel, or to be exact the main struggle done in the name of the LGBT community in Israel, is the Israeli Hasbara diplomatic struggle.

They use us to promote tourism to Israel. We are used to mock the flotilla initiative.

They use us to wash in pink the blood that Israel has been spilling.

They use us as the fig leaf meant to hide the state's shame.

They use us in order to portray the state of Israel as liberal and enlightened, waving around the flag of rights that were never granted to us, the flag of security that we've never felt, the flag of equality and acceptance that we've never experienced.

This is not our struggle!

We are not here to promote gay tourism, we are not here to assist Israel's diplomatic efforts, we are not here to pinkwash war-crimes!

We are here to fight for our rights!

We are here to fight for our right to housing, to jobs, to physical and mental security, to a family of choice, to acknowledgement and acceptance. We are here to promote a society with no oppression, no racism, no discrimination, a society which is diverse as well as equal. A society with no privileges, a society that is just and free. We are here to promote a society in which gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, queers, Palestinians, Mizrachis, migrant workers, and every Other, whoever she may be, enjoys the full rights that they deserve.

One more thing we must keep in mind. When the state of Israel prides itself in its tolerence and acceptance of the LGBT community, we must ask it, which community is it willing to accept? Because just like the TA municipality approves the tent-city in Rothschild blvd, the glory and the attraction, and the beautiful youths, but kicks away the tents in Levinski – the single-mums and the refugees, the work-migrants and the drug addicts – out of the way, so the state of Israel is willing to allow for male gay pride, with the glitter and the disco lights, but not for the butch-femme couple that walks hand in hand down the street, nor the gay Palestinian from Hachshmal garden, nor the FTM who wants to be addressed in male pronouns, yet doesn't want to undergo a surgery, nor the polyamorous bisexual that wants both her male and female partners to be acknowledged.

And some final words: when the LGBT community had only started forming, there were, indeed parties, and there were dances, but above all there was struggle. We haven't won the rights we do have because we asked for them nicely, nor were they presented to us on a silver platter by the Israeli state. Blood, sweat and tears have been spilled in order to allow us to march here today, in Jerusalem, and yes, also in Tel Aviv.

I have a feeling that somewhere along the way a part of this equation got lost. So it's true that if I can't dance to it, it definitely isn't my revolution, but it's about time to bring back the revolution into our dance!

בשנתיים האחרונות אני מקבלת יותר ויותר את התחושה שהמאבק המרכזי של הקהילה הגאה, או למעשה המאבק המרכזי שמנוהל בשם הקהילה הגאה בישראל, הוא מאבק ההסברה של מדינת ישראל ברחבי העולם.

משתמשים בנו כדי לקדם תירות לישראל, משתמשים בנו כדי לשים ללעג את יוזמת המשט.

משתמשים בנו כדי לצבוע בורוד את הדם שישראל שופכת.

משתמשים בנו כעלה התאנה שנועד לכסות את ערוותה של המדינה.

משתמשים בנו כדי להציג את מדינת ישראל כמדינה ליברלית ונאורה, תוך נפנוף בזכויות שמעולם לא הוענקו לנו, תוך נפנוף בבטחון שמעולם לא היה מנת חלקנו, תוך נפנוף בקבלה ובשיוויון שמעולם לא השגנו.

זה לא המאבק שלנו.

אנחנו לא כאן בשביל לקדם תיירות גאה, אנחנו לא כאן בשביל המאמץ ההסברתי, אנחנו לא כאן בשביל לצבוע בורוד פשעי מלחמה!

אנחנו כאן כדי להאבק על הזכויות שלנו!

אנחנו כאן כדי להאבק על זכותנו לדיור, לעבודה, לבטחון פיזי ונפשי, למשפחה נבחרת, להכרה ולקבלה. אנחנו כאן כדי לקדם חברה ללא דיכוי, ללא גזענות, ללא אפליה. חברה שיש בה שוני אבל גם יש בה שיוויון. חברה נטולת פריבילגיות. חברה צודקת. חברה חופשית. אנחנו כאן כדי לקדם חברה שבה הומואים, לסביות, ביסקסואליות, טרנסג'נדרים, קווירים, פלסטינים, מזרחיות, מהגרות עבודה, וכל אחר ואחרת באשר הן נהנים ממלוא הזכויות המגיעות להן.

ועוד דבר שחשוב לזכור, כשמדינת ישראל אומרת שהיא מקבלת את הקהילה הלהטבית, מן הראוי לשאול אותה איזו קהילה היא בעצם מקבלת. כי כשם שעיריית תל אביב מוכנה לאפשר את מאבק האהלים בשדרות רוטשילד, את הזוהר והאטרקטיביות והצעירים היפים, אבל מסלקת מהדרך את האהלים בלוינסקי – את החד הוריות, את מהגרי העבודה, את הפליטים והנרקומניות, כך מדינת ישראל מוכנה לאפשר את הגאווה ההומואית עם הנצנצים והאורות המרצדים, אבל לא את הזוג הבוצ'-פמי שמחזיקות ידיים ברחוב, לא את ההומו הפלסטיני מגן החשמל, לא את הטרנס שרוצה שיפנו אליו בלשון זכר, אבל לא רוצה לעבור ניתוח, לא את הביסקסואלית הפוליאמורית שרוצה הכרה גם בבן וגם בבת הזוג שלה.

וכמה מילים אחרונות לסיום. כשהקהילה הגאה רק התחילה להתגבש, היו שם מסיבות, והיו שם ריקודים, אבל לפני הכל, היה שם מאבק. לא קיבלנו את הזכויות שיש לנו כי ביקשנו יפה. הן אף פעם לא הוגשו לנו על מגש של כסף מידיה של המדינה. דם, יזע ודמעות נשפכו בשביל שנוכל לצעוד כאן בירושלים, וכן גם בתל אביב.

אני מרגישה שאיפשהו בדרך חלק מהמשואה הזו הלך לאיבוד. אז זו אמנם לא המהפכה שלי אם אני לא יכולה לרקוד בה, אבל הגיע הזמן להחזיר לריקוד את המהפכה!

“הצעת החוק לעידוד הנקה ושמירה על אופן הזנת תינוקות", מבית היוצר של ח"כ דני דנון, מובאת בימים אלה לקריאה טרומית. על פי ההצעה אישה המעוניינת שלא להניק תצטרך לחתום על טופס מיוחד, באישור שר הבריאות, שמסביר לה את כל יתרונותיה של ההנקה. רק לאחר מכן יוכל תינוקה לקבל תחליפי חלב. כמו כן אוסרת ההצעה על פרסום תחליפי חלב אם בשטח בית החולים ובית היולדות.

במבט ראשון, מדברי ההסבר לחוק, נראה כי לחוק ישנן מספר מטרות לגיטימיות, ואולי אף חיוביות – הוצאת המפרסמים מבתי החולים, עידוד הנקה, וחשיפתן של הנשים היולדות למידע רב יותר. אולם, בחינה של כל אחת מהמטרות האלה בפני עצמה, מראה כי ניתן היה להשיג כל אחת ואחת מהן בדרכים רבות אחרות, יעילות בהרבה.

אם מטרת המחוקק הינה הוצאת המפרסמים מבתי החולים, אין צורך לחייב נשים לחתום על טפסים ומסמכים מיד לאחר הלידה. על הדרך כדאי להוציא את המפרסמים גם מקופות החולים, ממשרדי הרופאים שלנו, ואולי גם משלטי החוצות בנתיבי איילון. כל זאת עדיף לעשות באמצעות חקיקה הנוגעת ישירות למפרסמים, מקיפה ורחבה בהרבה מההתיחסות הספציפית מחדרי היולדות. בנוסף, ובו בזמן, מן הראוי שהמדינה תחליף את המפרסמים ותסבסד ליולדות שבוחרות שלא להניק את תחליפי החלב.

אם מטרת המחוקק היא עידוד הנקה, ניתן להשיגה בדרכים רבות – פעולה כנגד בעלי עסקים שאינם מאפשרים לנשים להניק בשטחם, פתיחת פינות הנקה במשרדים, אוניברסיטאות ובתי עסק, הארכת חופשת הלידה, ופעולה כנגד מעסיקים שמפטרים נשים בהריון ואמהות צעירות, הגברת המודעות לאפשרותן של אמהות לקחת הפסקות הנקה במהלך יום העבודה, ופתיחת מעונות יום מסובסדים בקרבה למקומות העבודה שתאפשר ניצול מיטבי של הפסקה זו. במילים אחרות, הדרך לעודד הנקה היא הנגשה של ההנקה לנשים, והקטנת המחיר החברתי והכלכלי שהן משלמות על הבחירה להניק. כל הדברים הללו יתרמו גם לפתרונן של מספר בעיות חברתיות אחרות.

אם מטרת המחוקק לתת בידיהן של נשים מידע רב יותר על מנת לאפשר להן לבחור בצורה מושכלת את תזונת ילדיהן, ניתן, ראוי ורצוי לעשות זאת הרבה לפני שהן מגיעות לבית היולדות. זאת כמובן, תוך חשיפתן לכלל המידע, לא רק על יתרונותיה של ההנקה, אלא גם על חסרונותיה – על השלכותיה הפיזיות על גוף האם, על השלכותיה הנפשיות, על השלכותיה הכלכליות והחברתיות, ועל אפשרויות ההנקה של ההורה שלא ילד (כן גם גברים יכולים להניק). באותה ההזדמנות יש להעניק להן גישה למידע, שלא מפי המפרסמים, על כלל תחליפי חלב האם השונים המצויים בשוק, על יתרונותיהם וחסרונותיהם. בנוסף, יש עוד נושאים שכדאי להרחיב את ידיעתן של האמהות לעתיד לגביהם – מידע על דכאון אחרי לידה, וסימניו המקדימים, על זכויותיהן התעסוקתיות, ועל הגברת הקשר בין ההורה הלא ולדן לבין הילוד.

אם כך, מדוע בכל זאת להכנס לחדרי היולדות ולהחתים אותן על טפסים, בדיוק בשלב בו הן זקוקות למנוחה ולשקט, וממש לא מעוניינות להתעסק בפרוצדורות בירוקרטיות. התשובה היא – שליטה.

לא מדובר כאן בהצעת חוק שנועדה לתרום לאם ולילוד כפי שמנסים להציג אותה. מדובר בהצעת חוק שנועדה להגדיל את מידת השליטה והפיקוח של המדינה והחברה על גופן ועל מחשבתן של אזרחיותיה. בהצעה שנועדה לוודא שברגעים בהן הן חשופות ופגיעות, ברגעים בהן הן זקוקות למנוחה ולשקט, וממש לא מעוניינות להתעסק בפרוצדורות בירוקרטיות, נשים תאלצנה למלא טפסים על מנת להמנע מלבצע פעולה פיזית שהן אינן מעוניינות בה. חלקן תמלאנה את הטפסים מבלי לעיין בהם באמת, רק כדי להפטר מהמטרד. אחרות תבחרנה להניק רק כדי לחסוך לעצמן את הטרדה, ואחרות נוספות תקראנה את הטפסים תחתומנה, ותתחלנה את טיפולן בתינוק עם מטען כבד של רגשי אשמה. גם אלה וגם אלה וגם אלה, תהיינה במצב בו "כי אני לא רוצה" אינה תשובה מספקת בשביל להמנע מעשיית דבר שנעשה בגופן.

אי אפשר לסיים מבלי לקשור את החוק הזה לשאר החוקים המתרגשים עלינו לרעה בימים האחרונים. חקיקה פאשיסטית אינה רק חקיקה האוסרת פעילות מחאה, או מצווה על חקירת מארגניה, כי אם גם חקיקה המצמצמת את חופש הבחירה והפעולה של אזרחי המדינה, וזה בדיוק מה שעושה הצעת החוק ההנקה.

מדובר כאן בחוק, אחד מני רבים, שמנסה להגביל את החופש של האזרחים, ובעיקר של האזרחיות לבחור, להתבטא, לחשוב ולנהל את חייהם. מדובר בחוק שמרחיב את מידת האחיזה של המדינה בחייהם של אזרחיה ובגופם (ושוב, בעיקר גופן). זאת, על אף שהוא לא דובר בהקשר הזה, וכמו מרבית החקיקה העוסקת בזכויות נשים, לא נכנס לכותרת של "זכויות אדם", אלא, סווג בעיקר תחת "ענייני נשים", ואת זה ראוי שיקחו לעיונם כל אותם גופים, פעילים וארגונים העוסקים בתחום.

 אני לא חושבת שאף פעם ראיתי כל כך הרבה אנשים מתלהבים מהאין. מישהי התרוצצה בין האנשים הנאספים להפגנה ושאלה "את ראית? את ראית?", כשהיא בעצם שואלת על מה שלא ראינו. לא ראינו שער צהוב, לא ראינו מגדל שמירה, לא ראינו חיילים, לא ראינו משאית בואש לבנה, מחכה להשפריץ עלינו את מימיה המסריחים במעלה הגבעה. לא ראינו גדר. בבילעין.

למעלה משלוש וחצי שנים אחרי פסיקת בג"ץ, למעלה משש שנים אחרי שהתחילו ההפגנות בכפר,  טיפסנו במעלה הגבעה, וחצינו את קו הגבול המסומן בשאריות צבע וניחוח של בואש. לא נעצרנו על ידי עננים של גז, למרות שבעיניים כן עמדו דמעות. הלכתי הלוך ושוב בין הכביש לעץ, לשביל, לא מעכלת שאף חייל לא נמצא שם כדי למנוע ממני לעשות את זה.

כמו באותה ההפגנה שחגגה את פסיקת בג"ץ לפני שלוש וחצי שנים, תפילת יום השישי התקיימה בחוץ. אז היא התקיימה ליד הגדר. היום, במקום בו היא עברה. הסתכלתי עליהם כורעים על שטיחי התפילה, ובאוויר הייתה תחושה של חסד, ובלב התרוממות רוח שכמעט לא ניתן להכיל.

מישהו הסתובב עם חולצת "From Berlin to Bilin – The Wall Must Fall", עצרתי לידו, והסתכלתי על החולצה, החוויתי על המרחבים נטולי הגדר מסביבי וחייכתי, לא היינו צריכים מילים. "לא תוכלו להמית התנגדות עממית", ו"הגדר צריכה לפול", ו"בילעין, בילעין אל יאוש", וכל אותן סיסמאות שאנחנו מפריחים לחלל האוויר כל שבוע, נטענו לפתע מחדש במשמעות ובתקווה.

הדרך אל החומה החדשה ארוכה, והשדות בה עדין חרוכים – מתנת הפרידה של המתנחלים, מזכירים שהמאבק לא נגמר, ואת כל מה שאבד בדרך. אבל עצי הזית עומדים ירוקים וגאים, והחיוכים לא יורדים מהפנים, והשמחה מנצנצת בעיניים, כשאבן הפינה לשכונה החדשה מונחת, והמוזיקה מהמשאית ממלאת את החלל, והריקודים לא פוסקים, והשוקולדים באריזות זהובות מנצנצות בשמש, נזרקים באוויר ונתפסים בהתלהבות על ידי ילדים ומבוגרים כאחד.

 והכיבוש לא נגמר, והדיכוי נמשך בלי הפסקה, והחומה בנתיבה החדש עדין מספחת 30% מאדמות הכפר, והדרך עוד ארוכה ומפותלת, והסוף ממש אבל ממש לא נראה באופק, אבל הפלנו את הגדר בבילעין, ולכמה רגעים אופוריים, לשום דבר אחר לא הייתה משמעות. (צילום: אורן זיו)

I am running away from another salvo as I spot five adolescents carrying someone who was injured. No paramedic can be found in the area, so I run after them, my first aid kit on my back, hoping that I can be of some assistance. They bring him to a room that is open to the street, in a side alley. An ambulance is parked at the entrance, from which two other wounded people are being removed. Five or six paramedics and a single doctor are running around between several people, only thin blankets separating them from the floor, trying, at the very same time, to wave away the people crowding outside, waiting to find out about the condition of the friends that they have carried in earlier. I address the doctor, telling him I have got some basic first aid training, and offer my help. He gives me some instructions, shows me were the equipment lies, and tells  me to care for the next wounded person that will be brought in.

The wounded  are  streaming in incessantly. Every minute, or two, three at most, an ambulance stops by the entrance, and three paramedics rush to it asking "Mutauta" or "Raz"? (Rubber bullets or gas?) While the injured are being carried off. Those in severe condition are carried in on a stretcher, which doesn't leave much space in the narrow room. Then  they are clumsily taken off the stretcher. There is not enough time to follow the right procedure of carrying someone who has been wounded. The rest of them are carried in by paramedics and friends, who grab their legs and hands, and more often then not forget to support their heads, and place them on the floor, as close to the wall as possible, to make room for the wounded who are yet to arrive.

At these scarce and numbered moments of recess in the stream of wounded ones, we cut onions, reorganize the room and the equipment table. Piling gauze pads and bandages on one side, alcohol and cotton wool on the other, shaking and straightening blankets, and sweeping away all the onion leftovers that fall from them.

Most of the wounded people fainted from an overdose inhalation of tear-gas. Breathing some fresh air, an open shirt, a fresh onion scale leaf, and some light slapping usually suffice to help them regain consciousness. In the worst cases we bring the oxygen balloon. They lie and sit all around, gasping, coughing, taking short breaths, their eyes  shut tightly against the pain, as the tears stream down their cheeks, and we gently try to lift the upper lid, and absorb the remnants of the gas. Others were directly hit by gas canisters and rubber bullets, and as time goes by we see more and more of these injuries.

At some point, we run out of oxygen, not metaphorically speaking. The last balloon is empty, and a guy is choking in our hands, and all we can offer him are a piece of onion, cotton wool, an encouraging touch, and  the fear that is written all over our faces, that this time it will not suffice.

Scattered pictures… I am rolling a white bandage around Huria's head. She was hit by a rubber bullet in her temple. She is surrounded by friends, holding her and supporting her… Someone was directly hit by a gas canister in his chest. Luckily, the canister did not break the skin. Nonetheless there are some hectic moments. We can't find the statoscope, or the blood pressure monitor. He will be fine… Two little girls half-fainted from the gas. In their tears the gas and fear mix together. I hug one of them as I put an alcohol pad to her face. Her mother and her sister are on the floor, on the other side of the room. Someone is taking care of them. Several moments go by. They sit and hug, leaning against the wall, trying to breathe, together. I give them one last look. There are many others that need my caring…. In a sideway look I spot a guy leaning against the wall. None of us has paid any attention to him, because he had already been treated. His head drops, his hand becomes limp, I run over to him, hold his hand, and start calling him "Mumtaz, Mumtaz". I am having a basic conversation, using my poor Arabic, trying to make him stay with me, so that he will not lose consciousness. So that we will not lose him… More, and more, and more.

After an hour, and dozens, if not more than that, of injured people taken care of, the improvised medical clinic is moving to a different location. I follow the paramedics down the street, as I spot someone falling, I rush over to take care of him. In all the turmoil I lose the others, so I rejoin the demonstration that goes on and on.

And all of that happened before they started shooting LIVE ammunition.
